Faye Mayo

Faye works with clay because she enjoys its malleability, the way it captures imprints and marks during the making process, and how glazes evolve and flow when fired.

She studied Ceramics and Textiles, earning a BA (Hons.) from Goldsmiths' College, London. Drawn to the course for its focus on patterns and textures, which play a significant role in her work, Faye set up her studio in the early 1990s. Since then, she has been creating vessels and sculptures.

Significant influence

In 1996, Faye moved to the Balkans with her husband to work in humanitarian aid. She was inspired by the texture of old Serbian houses, their worn, layered surfaces, and peeling paint revealing hidden layers.

Despite witnessing horror, Faye became deeply aware of life's fragility and the temporary nature of material things. Though textures and experiences influence her work, it centres on fragile lives and our connection to the creator.
