A rosebud is a promise of greater beauty yet to come, a metaphor perhaps of the feminine journey.
In Orson Welles' Citizen Kane, "Rosebud" is the last word Charles Foster Kane utters on his deathbed. This enigmatic word becomes the central mystery of the film, driving the investigation into Kane's life. It is revealed that "Rosebud" is the name of Kane's childhood sledge, representing a time when he was happy as a child and loved unconditionally by his mother. His last moments of innocence and happiness were when he was playing on the sledge just before he was taken away from his mother to a life of material success where contentment and happiness eluded him despite his wealth and power. The beauty of growth is not in the delusion of wealth and status but in knowing we are truly loved.
Deborah says: 'the Skye marble block was initially going to be a tulip as it was yellow in colour. But as I carved it was nearly all removed as it was only a few mm deep. I continued in the theme of a flower, and it developed into this rosebud.'MediumSkye marble, for indoor display. Completed May 2025
