As usual, Deborah sensitively followed the stones lead. The exterior markings were so stunning and, wanting to make make of the alabaster qualities, Deborah made it thin enough for the light to shine through. She had envisaged having a sphere emerging from the stone then realised the outer shape was the shape of a shell, so this sphere must be a pearl!
The name for this sculpture is derived from Greek mythology, where pearls are said to be the tears of joy shed by Aphrodite the goddess of love. Pearls are formed within some molluscs due to the release of deposits to protect from the irritation of a piece of grit. Something which originally is a hindrance becomes a thing of beauty.
