Lardon Chase - Large Catalpa Hollow Form

One of a pair of hollow form vessels that were turned from Catalpa bignoniodes (Indian bean tree). They came from a listed tree at the bottom of Lardon Chase in Streatley-on-Thames. During a storm in the winter of 2020 the tree was blown down and Pete assisted with the tidy up in return for some of the timber. These forms were turned from the fresh timber and allowed to dry before being sanded and finished with mineral oil and a beeswax polish coat made from wax produced in my own bees at the nature reserve. This species of tree is native to the southern region of the USA, though it could be considered somewhat native to Europe as fossils have been found dating back to between 66 million years ago to 2.6 million years ago.
