I had great fun producing this piece, it was the 4th in my satellite series. I’ve always been a bit mesmerised by the images we can see on satellite maps or from places like the international space station; even a plane.
After an extended period dabbling with paints and sanding things back to bare wood and trying again I reached the effect I was going for.
The Glacier piece reminds me of when glaciers meet the ocean, the ice white tops, the dark cold ocean and the melt ice all separate but all merging together.
To produce the piece I selected a cut of sycamore and rough turned the form. The bowl couldn’t be hollowed at this time as I needed a flat surface to work on. After about 4 months of slow drying the wood I could recut it to remove any warp and start painting. When I was happy with it a clear coat of epoxy resin was poured over the top to seal the wood and paint. Once dry, the form was returned to the lathe and the bowl was cut, the sanding was done and a Danish oil finishing coat applied.
