Still standing

When you add a little bit of wire wool to vinegar you produce an interesting little solution that blackens woods that are rich in tannins, this process is known as ebonising.

This hollow form vessel was made from cherry tree that had sadly died standing, the trunk needed to be felled due to its proximity to an active area at the reserve. The hollow form was turned, ebonised and polished before the banding was hand textured to reveal the natural colour of the cherry beneath. I felt this form and style did the tree justice, with the shape of the form it can be sat on its base, it can be sat on a slant; but it struggles to fall over. The shape echoes the strength of the wood, the tree and the material. There is a juxtaposition in being a conservationist and a wood worker, I celebrate trees and timber both in their own rights. These aspects came together in the varied textures and ultimate shape of the piece.
