Caryatids of Montpellier

  • £695

The original artwork of the iconic Caryatids that line the streets of Montpellier, Cheltenham.  Created using white charcoal and conté pencil.

Caryatids provide support to the elegant facades of the boutiques along Montpellier Walk. Originating from 1840, they draw inspiration from classical designs found on the Acropolis in Athens, serving as decorative elements widely employed in 19th-century France.

In total, there are 32 Caryatids, with two initially crafted in terracotta by a London artist named Rossi, while the rest were replicated by a resident of Cheltenham.

The Greek term karyatides literally means "maidens of Karyai", an ancient town on the Peloponnese.
